Recent developments:
I talked to the recruiter I’ve been working with on the phone this morning. Next week is Golden Week, a week-long holiday in Japan that I neglected to make any plans for. However, the recruiter suggested that the Army would be willing to fly me to Guam for that week to take the medical and mental tests necessary for admission to the WOFT. I see this as a win for me.
I also saw some stuff in the news which I thought was interesting. A taste for danger. This happened to me in a role-playing game once.
WOFT?
Warrant Officer Flight Training–the army’s program that I’m looking at. If they choose me for it (the choice happens before I commit to enlistment), I’d be put on the path to piloting helicopters. My interest stems mainly from the fact that flying, as a career, sounds like a lot of fun.
Just know that if you enlist, you are promised a shot at the training.
If you don’t pass, you are still property of the Army, and can be reassigned to whatever they need you to do.
Like scout Iraqi highways for IEDs.
Just so you are forewarned. I’m not trying to dissuade you, I joined the Marines right out of high school. I just want to be sure every soldier understands what he is siging up for.
Thanks; I do understand that passing is my responsibility, and that failure to complete the training does not void the contract I’d sign. I have enough confidence (arrogance?) in my own abilities, though, that I’m not particularly worried about that.
No problem. I wasn’t implying that you wouldn’t pass, just wasn’t sure if anybody pointed out the fine print. I know a number of people who enlisted with a “guaranteed” assignment, but didn’t make the cut for a particular school and wound up doing something else.
I was a grunt, but on purpose, so that was cool.
