I want to capture a frame from an AVI file. However, attempting to take a screenshot of the proper frame generates an image of a transparancy color into which the video frame is painted. This occurs in both Media Player Classic Windows Media Player, and I’ve tried at least five different screenshot programs (in addition to the plain old ‘print screen’ key) and the results are always the same.
I suspect that video editing software would help here. However, it seems like there’s a ton of stuff I just don’t know about dealing with video on the PC. If it helps, the 4cc code of this video is ‘div3′, and VirtualDub refuses to open the file because I don’t have a VFW filter for files using this codec.
Based on the internet, it seems like div3 is based on the DivX codec, and that VFW is an old and deprecated technology predating DirectShow (which the DirectX codec uses). Thus, I’m pretty sure that waiting for a codec to be developed for the older technology won’t help me. Instead, I need to use a better editor. I prefer ones which are open source, but as long as it has a trial mode that works long enough to capture a few stills, I don’t really care which one.
Ideas?
