One definition of a friend is a person in whose company time passes unreasonably quickly. Under that definition, I can count at least five of my adult students among my friends. Put otherwise, I would normally notice the amount of time spent in a restaurant long before four hours had passed.
I take pride in the fact that I caught about 15% of their conversation in Japanese. Their skill in English far surpasses my grasp of Japanese, but they still need me to speak more slowly and clearly than I normally would to make use of that skill. I’m pretty sure I’ve got them beat in listening comprehension, at least. In other news, very little motivates language study so much as catching intriguing fragments of gossip which are usually much blander in the students’ attempts at translation.
