In recent news…

It’s no secret that I’ve been applying for jobs in Japan. About two and a half weeks ago, I had a telephone interview from a company that I think would be really fun to work for. They said I’d hear back from them within two weeks.

The two weeks went by, with increasing amounts of worry as the deadline approached. At the two week mark, last Tuesday, I sent an email asking what my status was. There was still no reply, at all.

As of this afternoon, I was more curious than anything else. I figured that it was ok if I had been rejected; there are other prospects. Still, the interviewer had said at the time that it seemed like I would be a good match and that it was a matter of getting approval from the hiring manager more than anything else; also, the complete lack of response was confusing. In past communications, I never had to wait more than a day to hear back from them. It was as if the whole company had dropped off the face of the earth.

Tonight, as a last-ditch effort to figure out what was going on, I called them. I managed to get through, and discovered that due to Golden Week, the whole company had the past week off. I was assured that I had not been rejected and that I should be hearing back from them early next week, and that I had a very strong application.

I still don’t have a definite job offer from them, but I have a good feeling about this. I’m hoping that a week from now I’ll have my plans finalized as to where I’m going to live in Japan, and for whom I’m going to work. If this all works out, I’ll have less than a week between when my current job ends (due to the end of the school year) and when I’ll be working for the new company.

Clearly, the prospect excites me.
