life is good

I got the job at camp Segowea; the only one who was really surprised was my mother. Still, it’s good to have the plans for the rest of my summer confirmed…

Speaking of the which, I’m going to spend a large portion of the next few months away from my computer. My summer plans currently look like this:

20020617 1040 dep logan for sheppard afb
20020621 2130 arr logan from sheppard afb
20020622 1200 dep rochester via road for overnight lodging
20020623 1100 arr camp segowea via road from overnight lodging

20020825 dep camp segowea for WPI
20020825 arr camp segowea for WPI

note that after the 17th of this month, i’ll only be home for approximately 13 hours before heading out, ultimately to school. i plan to spend most of those hours sleeping. also note that except when I’m at home, I won’t have access to a computer.

in short, in a little less than two weeks, i’ll cut off from all of you until the school year begins. just letting you all know.

i get along well with my sister. she was born exactly two years behind me; we share the same birthday. it’s kind of funny; i get to see her turning more and more into myself as time goes on. she’s already started to mimic my interests and habits to one degree or another. by the time i’m 26, i expect we’ll be able to pass for unidentical twins.

which is not to say that she’s some sort of mini-me, she’s certainly got her own identity and whatnot. she’s got her own friends, aspirations, and whatnot. still, as time passes, i see more and more habits, mannerisms of speech, and other personal tidbits that she’s picked up from me.

i say all this because today i made two tiedye tshirts. the afterschool program whose staff i am part of was running a tiedye workshop today for the kids, and i took the opportunity to make one for myself, and one for my sister. it was kind of funny; 95% of the kids were making a spiral pattern. i led the 3% who folded the shirt to make geometric patterns. 1 person just sort of bunched things up into a ball.

then, after i got out of work, i came home, set the ink of the shirts in the drying machine, and gave one of them to my sister. at which point, we went on a bike ride. we had to take my little brother, because my parents weren’t home at the time and he’s still scared to be home alone. still, after a while riding slowly, we managed to drop him back off at home with a movie and ride for a little while for real.

unfortunately, we didn’t get far before the sun set, effectively putting an end to the riding day.

we had an interesting diversion as the sun was setting, though: my sister was riding my old schwinn frontier (which i had basically abandoned since i got the one-better model, the mesa) and the right gearshift lever on her bike managed to detach itself from the handlebars. i managed to fix this without tools, on the spot, sacrificing only the label indicating exactly which of the five rear gears she was currently occupying. this was possible since it basically involved re-screwing in the bolt with my thumb.

we must have been a sight, though: a pair of people, both above average height and more than usually fit, riding down the roadways and trails both on red mountain bikes. the bikes mirrored the similarities between us, because they look very similar at first glance. mine is larger; hers is lighter in color… i could go on with the metaphorical comparisons, but it’d be rather pointless. we had my brother take a picture of us; if it comes out well i’ll scan it and post it here.

i feel like we managed some nifty bonding.
