final job update

so. after something like two weeks of jobhunting for a full time job, suddenly today I get job offers from two companies each of which wants to hire me part time. why not?

because the second job makes me feel guilty for accepting the job.

The first job I got doesn’t make me feel bad, because it ends just about the same time I leave for the rest of the summer, because it’s me helping out with the after school program at the local middle school.

the other job, though… I’ll be a cashier at decathlon sports. it’s a decent job, that pays decent money, and the manager seems like a decent guy. problem is, I leave the state in just over a month and don’t come back for the rest of the summer. or the early school year. In fact, I’m expecting to come back to this state no sooner than December for any length of time.

Meanwhile, at Decathlon I’ll be partway through the training when I leave. I won’t have done any useful work for them yet; I’ll just be training for basically the whole time I’m there. Training, if it’s like training I went through at a previous job, means sitting in front of a TV or computer, watching a video.

The first few jobs I applied for told me that they couldn’t hire me because I would be gone for the majority of the summer. That training me would be a bad investment on their part because they wouldn’t get productive work out of me.

So I stopped mentioning that I’ll be gone for the majority of the summer. Needless to say, now I feel like a tool. Because I’m going to have to say to the guy who hired me, “sorry, I’m leaving now. you’ll just have to cut your losses. I didn’t tell you this because I wanted your money more than I valued my integrity.” According to company policy, the job is strictly a matter of convenience, to be terminated with or without cause by me or the company at any time. I made sure to only apply at companies that had that clause in their employment contracts, after I stopped mentioning when I was going to leave. Because at least that way they can’t get me into trouble for not letting them know.

I just really, really with that my two week notice didn’t have to happen three days after I started training.
